state of the union
the delectable tom brokaw has informed me that not only is john ashcroft not attending (so if the building is bombed we’d have someone to rebuild the government [a frightening thought-- ashcroft rebuilding, not the bomb]) but the president is wearing a blue tie– i missed if that was symbolic or important.

I don’t know what Awful W’s handler thinks, but blue is the color of loyalty — “true blue”. For reasons that escape me, the TV media in general uses Red for gops & Blue for dems. Probably he is wearing it (remember that the necktie is a penis symbol) to “calm us down”. To make us think he doesn’t want to fuck us over.
Notice Hillary is in black.

28 Jan 03 at 8:39 pm #i just want ted kennedy to yell out “jackass.”
28 Jan 03 at 8:42 pm #Yes, but that would be funny during any nationally-televised event.
By the way, if you were playing the State of the Union Address Drinking Game, you’d be snockered by now.
28 Jan 03 at 8:51 pm #Well, I thought it was a dandy speech; then again, I’m quite a bit more conservative than most people that hand ’round here.
I just wish we’d leave the rest of the world alone and concentrate on our own problems. Africa… blah blah blah… help the world… blah blah blah. Let’s get the bums off the street corner so they’ll stop trying to wash the damned windshield of my SUV!!!

29 Jan 03 at 5:47 am #I agree with Edge; We hae enough inner turmoil to deal with before we as a nation go trotting over somewhere else asking if they want help; Would you accept a neighbor’s offer to mow your grass when his yard looks like crap?
Iraq should be dealt with only because we made that monster back in the Carter/Regan administrations. Bush Sr. didn’t want to risk tarnishing his image by expending the needed resources to extinguish Saddam when his re-election seemed just around the corner; We all know how fruitless THAT was when we saw Clinton sit down at the presidential desk in the Oral Office. The result was a bully who now had a grudge against the US. Diplomacy is only a formality before we go to war, and it won’t be a huge war. I think in a year we’ll have dismantled Iraq’s current structure.
After that, let’s get the hell out and deploy the army to whatever city has the winning teams for each major sporting events; The Oakland fans wouldn’t have had a chance if a few dozen platoons were armed and ready to deal with them.
29 Jan 03 at 6:44 am #Maybe we wouldn’t be so worried about other countries’ oil supplies if we chose not to drive gas guzzling SUV’s with dirty windows. Get a smaller car and pay the bum on the street to stay away from your windows with some of the money you save.
29 Jan 03 at 9:14 am #It is sad. I cant believe the class envy whenever someone brings up S.U.V.s. You know an SUV gets roughly 8% worse gas mileage on average than minivans. That isn’t much but i never hear anyone bashing minivans or the fact that 65% of interstate shipping is done by enourmous diesel trucks. If you want to reduce our dependency on foriegn oil you have to understand inter-state commerce and the fact that EVERYTHING you consume has some connection to oil. Especially if you have a large power bill. When you go to the store and buy fresh cilantro it is tied to oil because ALL produce is shipped to the store by truck over the interstate hwy system. Why do you think that you get fresh strawberrys out of season? Oranges? Etc…. People need to stop picking on suv owners because we are ALL responsible for our countries consumption of fossil fuels. It is our luxurious lifestyle and products on demand that causes this huge consumption of fuel. America is a big country and it doesnt take a physicist to figure out that when you get on Ebay and buy something and 2nd-day-air it to your house you just contributed to the problem. I usually get people in denial and very angry responses when I talk about this because noone wants to take the blame for our lifestyles and liberals want to cop out.
We only import 12% of our oil from the middle east and
29 Jan 03 at 4:36 pm #I thought I was the only one who thought Tom Brokaw was delectable!
29 Jan 03 at 11:35 pm #Class envy? How does driving a YAV (SUV) cause class envy? Driving a Mercedes causes class envy, not a YAV. And, I hate to say it, but YAVs have only recently gotten the bad press, and in prior years, that bad press was being heaped on the Bimbo Box (Mini-van). People don’t bash Bimbo Boxes as much these days because more YAVs are being sold. The way I look at it, those who complain about either of these two vehicles do so (or have done so) interchangeably. But class envy? Give me a break.
30 Jan 03 at 4:30 pm #I dont even own an SUV but there is a certain amount of envy that I have heard in the past about “big gawdy gas guzzling” SUVs. It seems as if people who cant afford them are jealous. I am not because I really like cars mostly.
30 Jan 03 at 4:37 pm #Minivans and SUVs are both large sight blockers, like when you’re trying to back out of that tricky space and you can’t see over or around either of them. Or you’re behind them and can’t tell what color the light is. Minivans are so matronly, I just don’t know if I would feel right driving one. I don’t think I’m ready to step into that realm.
30 Jan 03 at 5:26 pm #I would hate driving a van. Minivans handle terribly and are almost dangerous around corners. They are a tad bit emasculating. You know I think that SUVs are just minivans that look like trucks and arent as emasculating as minivans.
