coat of barbed wire redux
so, for the last night of my writing class at the loft, i re-wrote “Coat of Barbed Wire.” it’s a short story about a lonely girl who goes to the mall to make friends, only things don’t work out quite as well as she liked.
before the workshop about my story, i wasn’t sure how keen i was about this story. after class now, i’m totally thrilled about this story, and with some of the suggestions, i think it might even kick a little ass (not quite cool enough to kick big ass).
so anyway, i was talking to the TTHM last night and telling him about the last night of class. i was telling him about the workshop and how he was written into the story. even after reading the story, he didn’t recognize himself. so i read him the passage again, and he sorta chuckled.
unfortunately, Smel and FFJ (who, for the uninformed, are in the class and were in the workshop) totally got the reference. TOTALLY! because, of course, sweet rob had to make some mention about the fact that i called the strange man reading james joyce in the bookstore a very tall, very handsome man. when he asked about that little burst of weirdness, tweedle dee and tweedle la-dee-da burst out into the worst case of 14-year-old giggles we’ve ever experienced in the class. so many giggle, in fact that rob had to tell them to simmer down a little (and as i write this i’m just busting out). i blushed about 392 shade of red and just waited for one of them to expose me for the stealing-from-my-own-life fraud that i am.
but they regained their composure like the mature women of the world that we are, and we went on to make fun of some other part of my story.
yeah…i think it was the ‘old enough to be her father’ line that lost me…
