love and hydrogen

i am absolutely going to bed right now. but only so i can read Jim Shepard’s Love and Hydrogen. this afternoon, i read his short story “Runway” about this guy who is happy about his wife’s happiness and his son’s happiness and the dog’s happiness, and yet he’s still compelled to go lay on the airport’s runway all the time. he measures how close the landing gear comes to squishing him and then adjusts his position accordingly. as with all good, kickass short stories, i’m not even coming close to doing it justice. all i know is that the story kicked me right in the teeth and i can’t wait to read the next story in the collection.
