on sunday i had to head over to the future home of Supergenius, Inc. to pick up some boxes from sister #4. when i arrived, sister #3 along with Cade, Nolie, and Liam were hanging out watching A Bug’s Life and waiting for sister #4 to do something that involved her computer.
somewhere in the house, Nolie had unearthed a teddy bear that when you squeezed its hand it sang the Beatles’ “All My Loving.” he loved it. he’d squeeze the hand and then the bear and i would sing “close your eyes and i’ll kiss you, tomorrow i’ll miss you. . ” we did it about 92,938 times in a row. Nolie was singing along the best he could, and then Cade joined in the nonsense, totally getting into the song.
“STOP!” sister #3 shouted after the 92,939th time. “you will not teach them beatles songs!”
“too late,” i said, smirking at her.
sister #3 hates the beatles. HATES them. why? because when we were kids i used to listen to the beatles every single night before bed. every.single.night. every night.i had checked out all the beatles albums from the library and made about 3920 mix tapes. and though we didn’t share a room per se, the four of us were stuffed into a giant room/closet/office thing. and so by default, she too would listen to the beatles every nght before bed. i don’t know why i didn’t listen on headphones, but i didn’t.
so, later that night, when we were at a bbq at sister #2’s. when nolie walked in the door, i scooped him up spun him around and starting singing “and while i’m away, i’ll write home every day. . .” and he sang along with me.
Your love of the Beatles only serves to increase my admiration of you tenfold.
Or even your once-long-ago-love.
