in the blog closet
last night in class, we workshopped a story about a digital romance between two people. the story was pretty ambitious and totally not the traditional kind of story we read a lot in class. the story was told through a series of electronic communications. i think (though i am not sure and that was one of the problems with the story) some of the communications were postings on message boards, blog comments, e-mails, IMs, etc.
anyway we were discussing the story, what worked, and what didn’t. and blogs were mentioned entirely too many times for my comfort. a lot of me ‘mates claimed to not know what a blog was or thought they were boring.
one guy even said “my sister-in-law has a blog and now i have to read about her boring life.”
i nearly had to sit on my lips to keep from shouting, “you don’t have to read it if you think it’s boring!”
intead, i stayed uncharacteristically quiet, and blushed furiously. i feel like whenever that topic comes up in writing class that i need to blurt out a big confession that i’m a blogger (and god i hate that term, it sounds too much like booger for my tastes).
but i didn’t. i just stayed quiet and blushed. blog always feels like a dirt word in fiction writing classes and that we shouldn’t sully ourselves by dipping into such a lowly artform.
so yes, i’m in the blog closet. kind of.

That’s nuts.
Guy “has” to read about his in-law’s boring life. Like there’s a gun to his head? Please.
Next time I want you to be load & proud! I think the gangster of love can handle that.

But you wouldn’t really care if they did, would you?
Besides, those who laugh first, don’t get the joke.

i was JUST talking about this with someone today! it’s like we’re hiding something criminal!
like, when people ask how i’ve met some of my buddies from the internets, i always freeze up and start making shit up – “oh, we had a class together” or “we worked together”. i would rather lie to some people than see “oh, see, we both have blogs!”
so, yeah.

Not to rip on the person writing the story, cause there are no “new” ideas but it sounds alot like Patrick Marber’s Closer than anything else.
Closer was a stage play before it was a terrible movie with Natalie Portman ,Jude Law, Clive Owen & Julia Roberts. I saw it done and though the effect of having to video feeds of people typing over head, while on stage was nice, it was still kind of ffft, “whatever,”
As far as clamming up about blogging, don’t hide it. When I tell people I am blogger or if they ask cause they have no idea what I am talking about, then I take great pleasure in talking to them like they are a 4-year old.
Cheers,

Jodi, can you tell me what the story was? Does it have name or something?

it was actually a story written by one of my classmates, and i can’t remember the name of it, because i gave the manuscript back to him at the end of class.
