Saturday, I attended a gathering of localish Westernerds at Wolfdogg’s house in St. Paul. It was, of course, great gobs of fun. But what do you really expect when you gather together a few handfuls of musicgeeks (and I am like the ungeekiest of this bunch) add some of the best damn strawberry margaritas ever consumed by humans and stir.

It’s the kind of group that gets together and talks music mostly (and some books) and then just rips each other to shreds in the funniest most sarcastic way possible. The kind of good-natured ribbing that can only occur between people who common tastes and spend too much time talking to each other on the Internet.

God, I love these people. They are fucking smart and fast and everything you want in peers. Seriously.

Anyway, the best part of the night was when Wolfdogg picked up his guitar and we started playing obscure song name that tune. It’s awesome because someone will start singing the song, and that song will remind them of something and we’ll just be chatting and singing and sharing memories of music.

I get all misty-eyed just thinking about it.

Somehow we got on the topic of the Jayhawks, and we were talking about which album’s the best and this that and the other thing.

Then Wolfdogg starts strumming the chords to “Blue.” And all at once all the Westernerds started singing the song. . . “Where have all my friends gone? They’ve all disappeared. Turned around maybe one day, you’re all that was there.”

It was beautiful. So many voices singing, everyone moved at the exact same time. It was like a movie where on cue everyone started singing. Only it wasn’t a movie at all, it was a livingroom in St. Paul. But if it were a movie, everyone in the audience would have gotten goosebumps. It was better than the Tiny Dance scene in Almost Famous. Even better than the Sweet Caroline scene in Beautiful Girls.

It gives me goosebumps just remembering it.

    hmm.

..and I thought the .38 special ‘hold on loosely’ would be the emotional high point of the evening.

I guess you can’t plan these things.
