This poster hung in my room for most of my sixth grade year. I would have been 11 or 12. I think Michael Jackson was the first rockstar that I loved in thatway. The evidence could be seen by the slightly-greasy pink-stained spot on the poster right where Michael’s lips were. Yes, I would often kiss the poster. I was practicing for the real thing. I was pretty sure that Michael and I would end up married and have parties with Webster and Brooke Shields. It would have been fabulous.
Of course, some 22 years later, I realize that Michael is a warped freakshow of a person. But back then he was IT. And, since today is his birthday, I am letting the 11-year-old Jodi revel in all the Michael Jacksoness that Kathleen Turner Overdrive has to offer.
And to indulge in my High-Fidelity fetish, I present to you a Michael Jackson Birthday Tribute list:
• The Girl is Mine (Michael fighting with another man for my love. what’s not to love? I still know this song by heart and have to actually consciously restrain myself from singing/talking it aloud here at work)
• Ben (I have known and loved too many Bens not to adore this song with a passion. The fact that it’s about a rat just seems like a beautiful, beautiful irony)
• ABC (come on! I just saw Clerks 2, this was unavoidable)
• One More Chance (this song reminds me of a young, drunk Sister #2 and her friend Burgerboy)
• Billie Jean (of course)

Human Nature was the best song on Thriller.
Just so’s you know.
