Stay gold, Aunt Jodi
Max is growing his hair out. He hasn’t cut it in months and months. He has curly hair so he’s got this odd, huge whiteboy ‘fro going on. Yesterday I had to babysit all the kidlings while Sister #3 met with her lawyer.
I was asking Max about his hair when he told me to wait a minute.
He grabbed this jean jacket and some sunglasses, ran out to the kitchen, and came back sporting both. He plopped back down on the couch and pointed at me. “Stay gold, Aunt Jodi, stay gold.” In my family we pronounce aunt to rhyme with taunt, and not like the bug.
“What?” I asked.
“Stay gold.”
“Who are you, Dally?”
“What?” he asked.
“From The Outsiders.”
“No,” he said. “I just like to tell people to stay gold.”
“You’re a weird kid,” I said.
“You’re a weird aunt.”
Johnny is the one who said Stay Gold, not Dally.
