Bill, I am curious about why you thought Persepolis was so terrible. I can see (though I disagree) how one would not think it a literary piece of art, however does that instantly make it terrible?

I don't think of graphic novels as a glorified comic books. Comic books are a genre of storytelling that generally sticks pretty close to the conventions that define that genre (and which is why I tend to stay away from most genre-fiction).

Persepolis, to me, presents a story in a new and original way. Satrapi probably could have written a traditional memoir. Her art adds to her story and conveys information in a way that words could not have. The whole picture is worth 1000 words and all that.

I don't remember if I read Persepolis in 2007 or 2008 (I believe it was 2007) but it was absolutely terrible. The fact that it has been hailed, especially by Century College as they used it for their "Common Book", as some sort of literary masterpiece is nothing short of laughable. I'm sorry but graphic novels, as mainstream as they might have become, are not literary anything -- they're a glorified comic book.

Out of the 90+ books I have read this year, I put Persepolis in line with A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah (which I definitely read in 2008 and even saw Beah give a speech in Minneapolis related to the book) -- at the bottom of my list.

What a wonderful list (wonderful because I loved many of these books, I guess).

I just ordered The Descendants based on your recommendation, thanks for all the reviews and pointing out so many worthwhile books over the years (as well as so many to avoid).
