So here’s a list of books that I found funny. I am only covering fiction here, which is hard because I find that not a lot of fiction books are funny, at least not funny on purpose. As for non-fiction if you can’t find the funny in David Sedaris or Sarah [...]

Getting things off my spleen
Going back to work after having a week off blows. Hard.
After reading The Gum Thief I have convinced myself that I have spleen problems.
I am not sure where a spleen is located but I have decided mine is about five inches under my left breast.
Al, the cutest girl on earth™, is going to have a [...]

The Gum Thief
Remember how excited I was about reading Douglas Coupland’s The Gum Thief? Yeah, that dried up and blew away leaving a vague sense of disappointment behind.
What we have here is an epistolary (god I love using that word) novel featuring the correspondence between 40-something alcoholic Roger, 20something goth-girl Bethany (both of whom work at [...]

As slow as a 1999 modem
Oh God. I came home today and because I can’t do anything but be lethargic, I picked up the book closest to the comfy green chair and started reading it. It was Douglas Coupland’s The Gum Thief. Thank the Lord for sending out The Gum Thief to me. I’m only twenty-one pages into the book [...]

hellojed
when lerren wrote in the comments about the fate of a hamster named coupland, i knew that name was out of the running. my mind immediately jumped to Jed (and apparently so did Lerren’s), because that’s Daniel’s password in Microserfs. Jed, is Daniel’s dead brother. Jed is also my new iBook.
and boy do i love [...]

happy international iBook delivery day!
allegedly the iBook is going to be delivered today. we still don’t have a name. lots of wonderful suggestions, i cannot deny that. it also seems that y’all have a knack for picking names that belong to various pets of people i know. . . MacKenzie, Oscar, Oliver.
so i’ve come to the conclusion that the [...]

eleanor rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
yesterday afternoon, when i finished reading Douglas Coupland’s Eleanor Rigby, i shut the book, curled into the fetal position and started to cry. a reaction that even surprised me a little bit. i cried, and i don’t want to give too much away, because there was a (albeit far-fetched) happy ending.
i needed this book [...]

the fatal flaw
i’ve been happily chugging through Douglas Coupland’s Eleanor Rigby all weekend. i’m pretty much loving it except for one thing. the narrative jumps around in time quite a bit, some of it takes place in 1967, some in 1997 and some in 2004. i can mostly keep up with the time shifts, though some of [...]

wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door
i’m working from home today. generally this means sitting around in pajama-like clothing with unbrushed hair eating pancakes. today, this is not the case at all. today i had to get dressed and brush my hair. i did however, just eat some delicious peanut butter pancakes so the day isn’t totally wasted. but i had [...]

file swapping
here’s my favorite portion (from memory) of douglas coupland’s reading at the ruminator:
“the only CDs i listen to are brought in by my 23-year-old studio assistant. he’s personally bringing bankruptcy to the record companies of the world by downloading most everything there is. yeah, as an author let me tell you about file swapping. we’ve [...]

i am sorry hon
i was up much too late reading all families are psychotic and had a slew of odd dreams to pay for it.
last night, i dreamt conan o’brien had a crush on me. not only did he have a crush on me, but his studio audience convinced him to fly out to minnesota to woo me. [...]

we love to make you smile
ya know, whatever you might say about Amazon.com. . . you gotta love their customer service. i sent them an e-mail asking about the new Douglas Coupland book i ordered in June, and that was supposed to be released in September– that i still haven’t got.
They apologized all over the place and said that the [...]
