It was dusk. The odd time of the day when it’s not quite day but not yet night. FFJ was on her knees in the grass next to the pine tree, a yellow shovel in her hand. I stood behind her watching as she dug, the little dead bird next to my feet. I could [...]

What not to do about a dead bird
When we last left the poor dead bird, it was swinging forlornly from the lowest branches of the pine tree. Sometime Saturday, the bird was blown from the tree and now lays feet up in the grass next to the tree. I was really hoping that once the bird was freed nature or the neighbors [...]
What to do about a dead bird
There’s a enormous pine tree across the street from Supergenius HQ. The lowest branches of the tree are about a foot and a half off the ground. Hanging by a thread, literally, from one of the bottom branches is a dead bird. It’s been there since Monday.
I am not sure how the bird got tangled [...]
My mom grew up in a tiny three-bedroom house in Savage with her six brothers and sisters. That house didn’t have a basement, so whenever the weather would get severe my Grammu would freak out and pace the living room, chain smoking Pall Malls. If things got too bad, she would gather up the kids [...]
Writers speak in dude
I wasn’t going to go to class tonight. I had a story due and I still seriously considered skipping. I even went so far as to send Vodo, Jags, and Hipster Mom an e-mail proclaiming my wussiness about the impending weather. It had been raining, sleeting, snowing, and thundering in Minnesota all day. I knew [...]
Tonight in Minnesota it snowed and then because that doesn’t make driving challenging enough it also decided to rain on top of that and then get cold enough to freeze. As my dad always likes to say, it was slickery.
Much to my own sense of pride, I decided to drive to class in the weather. [...]
Only in Minnesota
So apparently two hockey stars got married in Roseville over the weekend, and now it’s on People.com’s RSS feed. God I love this state.

if you don’t live in minnesota, you might not know that the entire world was turned into a skating rink last night. every last inch of the outside is coated with a fine sheen of ice. it’s like the glazed donut fairy got confused and decided to glaze minnesota.
after spending a good 20 minutes [...]
i awoke from my good night’s slumber at the ungodly hour of 7:30. now, while 7:30 is downright respectable on monday mornings, it’s nothing less than a sacrilege on sundays.
i didn’t wake of my own accord. no, i was wakened by the wind. it was howling in a most dramatic fashion. so much so [...]
fa-reez-ing
it’s so cold in here that i have goosebumps on all my 2000 parts. i’m thinking of burning my insurance forms and computer manuals in an attempt to generate enough heat to thaw the tip of my poor, poor goosebumped nose. what i really need to do is find my bob cratchet gloves, the ones [...]
commuter hell
like wendy, it took me for fucking ever to get to work. it also took me forever to get home. but i’m home now, safe and snug– and i don’t plan on dealing with this weather nonsense until the morning.
you know, i love minnesota and all. i really do, but i’d rather have the [...]
and that was the way it was
holy shit have i had a day. i am beat, bushed, and bemused. most of which i blame on the awful weather and the equally awful road conditions. i took 35W home. usually i do 80 on 35W and arrive home a mere 30 minutes after i leave my desitination. tonight, i did 45 tops, [...]
minus twenty-two
when the radio went off this morning to herald the coming of a new work day, the radio man said it was currently -22 degrees outside, and the windchill was -43. guess who mastered the art of getting dressed under the covers this morning– socks and all?
like the weather
here’s why everyone in minnesota is just a little bit off:
it’s the 50 degree temperature swings. it tends to make us a little batty.
